Materials:
5.5/I hook
I used Red Heart Super Saver in Retro Stripes for this piece, you will need roughly
150 yards / 2oz
Guide:
sl: slip stitch
hdc: half double crochet
hdc dec: half double crochet decrease
sc: single crochet
ch: chain your beginning ch in this pattern does not count as a stitch in this pattern.
Specialty Stitches: tc puff: yo over twice, insert into st, pull up a loop, yo and pull through 2 loops on hook leaving others behind, repeat x4, this leaves you with 6 loops on your hook, yo and pull through all 6, sl to close the st, on the next row you always ignore that sl and crochet in the top of the puff.
hdc in the back loop: like a regular hdc, but in the back 3rd loop instead of through the top loops like normal as seen in these pictures

Brim: Ch 10, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and across (8)
Row 1-38 (or until it measures 17”, when you measure this, lay it flat and do not pull it out or stretch it out, as this is what creates the stretch to the brim) ch 1, hdc in each st back loop only (8)
Join with a sl to beginning st, sl along the two edges to join, turn project right side out so that the seam is on the inside, you are now ready to move on to the hat body.
Hat Body:
Here with row 1 you will be crocheting into the sides of the hdc stitches to create the hat body.
Row 1: ch 2, 63 hdc (63)
Row 2: repeat row 1 (63)
Row 3: ch 2, 63 hdc in the backloop (63)
Row 4: ch 2, 1 tc puff, 2 sc, repeat x21 (63)
Row 5: repeat row 1 skipping all sl as in the special instructions (63)
Row 6: repeat row 3 (63)
Row 7: repeat row 3 (63)
Row 8: repeat row 4 (63)
Row 9: repeat row 5 (63)
Row 10: repeat row 6 (63)
Row 11: repeat row 7 (63)
Row 12: repeat row 4 (63)
Row 13: repeat row 2 (63)
Row 14: ch 2, 5 hdc, 1 hdc dec (53)
Row 15: ch 2, 4 hdc, 1 hdc dec (45)
Row 16: ch 2, 3 hdc, 1 hdc dec (36)
Row 17: 2 hdc, 1 hdc dec (27)
Row 18: ch 2, 1 hdc, 1 hdc dec (18)
Row 19: ch 2, hdc dec around (9)
Finish off leaving a long tail to weave in through the stitches and pull the hole closed, weave in ends,
or you can use the tail to sew on a pom pom!
